Local Color: Washington Painting at Midcentury

July 4 through October 13, 2008

Explore the expressive possibilities of color in this special installation of twenty-seven large-scale paintings from the Smithsonian American Art Museum's permanent collection. Local Color: Washington Painting at Midcentury examines the cross influences of Washington, D.C.-based artists between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s when our nation's capital was home to one of the most dynamic artistic communities in the country.

Looking beyond the Color School label, this exhibition explores the astonishing breadth of styles and techniques adopted by Washington artists Leon Berkowitz, Gene Davis, Thomas Downing, Sam Gilliam, Fel Hines, Jacob Kainen, Howard Mehring, Paul Reed, and Alma Thomas who were conducting innovative experiments with color and form.

Richard Currier has been working on his vision of creating fine art for more than 20 years. His paintings bring ordinary objects to life through his finely tuned technique, which is similar to that of the masters. The drama he instills in his subjects through color, shape, positioning, and space, forms his contemporary and highly compelling body of work. Turbulent and wonderful, his renderings of fruits, vegetables, and meats, truly give life to the still life and create an aura of mystery for anyone viewing his paintings.

Richard is the recipient of dozens of awards, and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States. He is represented in the Contemporary Art Center of Virginia, Quinlan Museum, Daytona Museum of Art and Science, The Deland Museum of Art, and is represented in private collections throughout the United States. Richard is a full time practicing artist, a native of Florida and resides in Micco, on Florida's east coast.

SPOTLIGHT on Gerry Wood

Gerry Wood has had a lifelong interest in art and was associated with painting as a child since her mother was an artist. A native of Tulsa, Oklahoma, she attended Oklahoma State University where she received her Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. It was not until later in her married life, when the children were older, that she took up art. Gerry studied art in private classes, art workshops, and adult education/community college classes.

Gerry is a signature member of the prestigious Baltimore Watercolor Society (BWS), Calvert Artists' Guild, Unique Boutique, Artworks @ 7th Gallery in North Beach, and CalvArt Gallery in Prince Frederick. She primarily paints in watercolors but does enjoy acrylics & collage, and her favorite subjects are landscapes, lighthouses, florals, barns, and fantasy fish series. Recent themes—water & herons, hot air balloons, barns & ponies, and flowers—Poppies, Roses, Tulips, and Geraniums.

To obtain artwork, prints, note card stationery, or inquire about her art classes, she may be reached at her home studio, 301-863-WOOD, (863-9663) email: gbwood2@verizon.net. Visit her web site at http://www.artbygerry.com/

SPOTLIGHT on Nancy Jung-Warmke

Nancy Jung-Warmke has been a member of Artworks @7th for approximately 5 years. She is originally from Berlin, Germany, but has lived in Calvert County for 15 years. Nancy studied both at the Torpedo Factory in Alexandria, Virginia, and at the Corcoran School of Fine Art in Washington, D.C. She has taught many art classes both from her home and in public school after-school programs. She was Creative Director for two of the Arts Council's Springtime fundraisers.
Her inspiration comes from the ordinary — the beauty of a skyline, tree line, or the horizon and its interaction with neighboring trees or bodies of water and sunlight. She continues experiment with layering pastel colors to achieve depth in her work.

A Woman's Story Gallery Presents Visions of Culture

Information, by Maria Santiago

VISIONS OF CULTURE, an art exhibit of A Woman Story Gallery and Empowered Women International opened on June 20 at Whole Foods Fair Lakes store in Fairfax, VA with the art of Empowered Women artists: Isabel Castaneda, Peru, Valentina Dimilo, Russia and Maria Santiago, Argentina.

The art opening reception will take place on Thursday, July 10, 6:30-8:30 at the Whole Foods Fair Lakes store. Guests will enjoy art, a talk by the artists and complimentary appetizers, desserts and wine by Whole Foods.

Powerful strokes of color and culture compose the art of the three foreign born artists featured in the Visions of Culture. Each artist in her own voice explores a personal journey through cultures and time, and the moment of arrival to a new destination, a newly found identity in a culture of people who dare to embrace differences. Although the journey is not flawless, the artists learn to re-imagine and re-construct their future and their visions of the new culture. All artists are recent immigrants to the United States, and graduates of EWI's entrepreneurial Training for Success. The art in the show is available for sale. Proceeds benefit the artists and Empowered Women International's arts and entrepreneurial program.

Empowered Women International promotes the art of immigrant, refugee and culturally diverse women and communities, and creates sustainable livelihoods through the arts. EWI was chosen by the Catalogue for Philanthropy as one of the BEST small charities in the Greater Washington region.

A WOMAN'S STORY GALLERY - A Traveling Cultural Art Space

A Woman's Story Gallery, a project of the Empowered Women International becomes a traveling gallery of art, culture and women's visions. We partner with retailers, museums and stores to feature the art of immigrant, refugee and culturally diverse women and communities.

Whole Foods Fair Lakes opened its doors to host A Woman's Story Gallery's shows, talks and exhibitions of the Empowered Women member artists. We plan to exhibit more than 8 solo and group shows a year, performances, music and other special events.

Rick Defilippis, Whole Foods Fair Lakes Store Team Leader who sponsored this project, says that "the work EWI does to give immigrant women and local artists a voice, business knowledge and a powerful presence is inspiring and so much needed. We are proud to be able to showcase the art and tell the stories of Empowered Women artists."

We are looking for art and projects that have not been exhibited before, and we welcome performing artists, storytellers, musicians, writers and multi-disciplinary artists. Artists interested to exhibit or perform can send Marga Fripp a call at 301-693-1346 or an email at cfripp@aol.com.
